Whom Do We Remember at the 70th Anniversary of the Ethiopian National Theatre? October 3, 2018 (E.C.)What distinguishes the theatre from other institutions is that it is a true house of art — a center where creativity is written, spoken, and expressed. Some artists may not seek fame or recognition; they simply work quietly, letting their art speak for them. One such figure is painter Yemane Luel. With his brush and canvas, Yemane Luel has dedicated himself to the theatre. When asked what he was working on, he replied: “I am painting the stage scenery for the historical play ‘Degiyaa’.” His art transforms imagination into reality, capturing landscapes and visions with depth and beauty.Yemane Luel served the Ethiopian National Theatre for 36 years, producing numerous works of art. Among them are:
  • Night Doves
  • Wedding Procession
  • Kali Gula
  • Wave of Love
  • Beyond Marriage
  • The Fall of Qaqi
  • Babylon in the Salon
  • King Armah
  • The Twelve Guests
In addition to these, he created more than 50 paintings, posters, and print designs, including the stage design for “Degiyaa.”Though now retired, Yemane Luel continues to contribute whenever needed, brush in hand, enriching the theatre with his artistry. We are grateful!
