About us

Established in 1955 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Emperor Haile Selassie I, the Ethiopian National Theatre is the nation's premier venue for the performing arts. Originally starting as "Cinema Marconi" during the Italian occupation, the building was transformed into a grand 1,260-seat landmark in the heart of Addis Ababa. Today, it stands as a symbol of cultural resilience and the "Great House" of Ethiopian music and drama.

The theatre is divided into two main areas, the theatre and the music directorate. It features notable art groups such as Ezra Public Music and Dance Group, Jared's Modern Orchestra, and the David Pop Orchestra. Currently, the facility is undergoing construction and renovation of a new 12-story headquarters at a cost of Rs 1.5 billion. He is also involved in promoting the story by organizing a new museum of photos and costumes in recognition of his 70-year artistic journey.
