Whom Do We Remember in the 70 Years? – Artist Demissie Shiferaw
As the Ethiopian National Theatre marks its 70th anniversary this November, we reflect on the many artists who, with their dedication, became shining stars in the world of art. Among them is the painter Demissie Shiferaw, whose works remain alive and vibrant even today.
Demissie Shiferaw was born on January 19, 1951 (E.C.) in Dessie, Wollo. He studied at local schools before moving to Addis Ababa to pursue his passion for painting at the Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts, graduating with a diploma in painting in 1969. He later earned his Master’s degree in painting from the Kiev Institute of Fine Arts in the former Soviet Union.
Upon returning to Ethiopia, he joined the Ethiopian National Theatre on September 26, 1979, serving as a stage designer until his passing on May 10, 1995. For 16 years, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to his profession, designing stage sets, posters, and artworks for countless plays, musical performances, and cultural events.
He was known for his tireless work ethic, often laboring more than 12 hours a day, and for his unwavering love of theatre. His stage designs and posters remain displayed at the National Theatre, keeping his legacy alive.
Demissie Shiferaw was a father of two children. He passed away at the age of 52, but his artistic contributions continue to inspire.
