A delegation led by Honorable Workesemu Mamo, Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Health, Social Affairs, Culture, and Sports, conducted an official working field visit to the Ethiopian National Theatre on December 21, 2018 (E.C.).
During the visit, members of the standing committee observed the theatre’s 70-year journey, its current state, and its overall operations. They also reviewed a detailed presentation titled “The Ethiopian National Theatre’s 8-Year Strategic Roadmap and Areas of Future Focus,” presented by the Theatre’s Director General, Honorable Dr. Manyazewal Endashaw.
Honorable Workesemu Mamo stated that the leadership changes and initiatives currently being implemented demonstrate great momentum. She emphasized that this sector is highly vital as it serves as a powerful mirror reflecting Ethiopia’s true image to the world.
Noting that the sector requires strong coordination to match the high expectations placed on it, Honorable Workesemu highlighted the visible initiatives and ideas being introduced by the leadership. She further noted that existing archival and written heritages must be digitized and organized in a modern way, while assuring that the committee will provide the necessary support and monitoring.
The Deputy Chairperson of the Standing Committee, Dr. ታደለ በርች (Tadele Berche), added that the National Theatre is a massive asset to the country. He emphasized the need to build on its current strengths, engage professionals, and encourage creative works to be produced through collaborative research.
Following detailed clarifications provided by the Director General regarding the issues raised by the committee, members expressed their satisfaction with the reforms initiated so far, emphasizing that these efforts must be strengthened and sustained.
