Marking the grand 70th Anniversary Jubilee of the Ethiopian National Theatre, the program titled “Ethiopian National Theatre: 70 Years of Artistic Journey in 7 Days” concluded today.
The Jubilee began on Hidar 3, 2018 E.C., with a colorful opening ceremony, and from Hidar 13 to Hidar 20, theatre performances, photo and costume exhibitions were offered free of charge to all art lovers.
Today, November 29, 2025, starting at 4:00 p.m., several scholarly presentations were delivered:
- Associate Professor Aklilu Zewde: “The Musical Work of the Ethiopian National Theatre: From Where to Where”
- Dr. Girum Arada: “The Ethiopian National Theatre and the Digital Era: New Stage Opportunities and Challenges”
- Candidate Dr. Manyazewal Getachew: “Administration of the Ethiopian National Theatre, 1948–2015”
Audience questions and comments were addressed during the session.
The opening remarks of the symposium were given by the General Director of the Theatre, Candidate Dr. Bareke Tadese, who recalled the institution’s history. He emphasized that the National Theatre has been a cradle of great cultural figures, including laureate Tsegaie Gebremedhin, and described it as a palace of artists. He noted that studying its past — what it was, what was interrupted, and what must continue — is essential.
Later in the evening, the closing ceremony featured performances by the March Band, the play “Love and Peace”, variety orchestra pieces, short theatre sketches, and a dance titled “Chiret.” The event concluded with a recognition and closing ceremony, bringing to an end the program “Ethiopian National Theatre: 70 Years of Artistic Journey in 7 Days” with a grand celebration.
